Women in recovery generally have a little tougher time in day-to-day living in the program than the guys because we have additional challenges.
Everything from child-bearing and hormonal factors (monthly or supplemental), to a smaller percentage of recovered women to work Steps with and/or choose a sponsor. Many of us have abuse issues that need addressing as we walk our journey and then there are the societal challenges in the workplace and current culture, and stress-related syndromes like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue that may frustrate progress as well.
It doesn't mean that the same process doesn't work for everyone, regardless of gender, or that we are so unique we should be pampered and given special treatment, per se. However, nurturing relationships with our sisters in sobriety can add an entirely new dimension to living happy, joyous and free.
The aim of Women Walking With Purpose, which we know translates as trudging the Road of Happy Destiny, is to bring women together in a setting where we can all learn from one another, expand our experience of life in recovery and deepen a relationship with our spiritual community in the Program while being respectful of all belief systems and spiritual paths.
Beginning in 2010, Women Walking With Purpose held a series of monthly gatherings to all work the 12 Steps together, in a manner of speaking. We completed the process in the Spring of 2011. The goal is to hold specific healing retreats in the first part of 2012 and work toward another series of facilitated Step Workshops in the fall of next year.
